“For this reason, it is essential to devote ourselves beyond measure to what we have heard, so that we should never drift away.”
-Hebrews 2:1
In chapter one, the author of Hebrews reveals:
  • God has appointed Him (Jesus) heir of all things and created all ages/time through Him. 1:2
  • King Jesus is the exact radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of His nature, sustaining all things by His powerful Word. 1:3
  • King Jesus made purification for sins (through His death on the Cross). 1:3
  • King Jesus has sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on High (because, as Jesus said on the Cross, “τετέλεσται” i.e. “it is finished.”) 1:3
  • In doing so, King Jesus became even more superior to the angels, just as the name He inherited (Jesus as The Good News, i.e. The Gospel: “Jesus is King,” is the εὐαγγέλιον) is superior to theirs (ἄγγελος: angel means “messenger”) 1:4
In chapter two the author then explains:
  • “For this reason...” Because of everything mentioned about King Jesus in chapter one
  • “it is essential...” absolutely necessary
  • “to devote ourselves...” to allocate, commit, surrender, abandon all of one’s time, resources, effort, and energy (heart, soul, mind, and strength!)
  • “beyond measure...” a statement of exponential intensification when paired together with “to devote ourselves," thus emphasizing all other endeavors, interests, etc. in life not only pale but vanish entirely in comparison to our zealous devotion to King Jesus
  • “to what we heard…” the message heard from angels/messengers (ἄγγελος), was not merely “news,” but The Good News (εὐαγγέλιον): “Jesus is King,” i.e. news advancing -unrelentingly- to the ends of the earth to accomplish God's plan and will to redeem humanity
  • “so that we should never drift away.”
A) Because of who King Jesus is (Eternally God the Son, Creator, Sustainer, The Word, Immanuel, The Lamb of God who made purification for sin at the Cross, the One seated at the right hand of Majesty on High because “it is finished,” and The Good News advancing to the ends of the earth)...
B) We are left with no other possible, plausible, or appropriate response other than: “devote ourselves beyond measure to what we heard so that we should never drift away.”
Devotion to King Jesus always translates into our becoming messengers of the Good News, i.e. personal involvement and investment in promoting and proclaiming: “Jesus is King!”
Anything less exposes misconceptions of a false and inferior Jesus who is merely: a good teacher, a prophet, a holy man, a created being, etc. All misconceptions of Christ are the result of sin; sin which leaves us hopelessly adrift in an ocean of depravity - bound for eternal torment.
It is only by the gracious, supernatural, and transcendent gift of faith in King Jesus we realize the hope and security of Hebrews chapter six:
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.” -Hebrews 6:9
Is King Jesus truly your only hope and the exclusive anchor for your soul?
Are you "devoted beyond measure" to what you have heard: Jesus is King?
Are you personally involved in advancing the Good News to the ends of the earth?
If not, Scripture states you are drifting away.
